Planning your wedding is an exciting whirlwind, but with all the focus on dresses, venues, and flowers, it’s easy to forget one crucial detail—your skin! Your wedding day is the one time in your life where all eyes (and cameras!) are on you, so ensuring you look radiant and feel confident is key.
Hiya! I am Vicky, owner of Glamorama Makeup, a professional wedding makeup artist in Liverpool with 20+ years of experience helping brides/marriers achieve their dream wedding look. I’ve got the insider info on how to prep your skin and perfect your makeup for the big day. Follow these expert tips, and you’ll have that ‘lit from within’ glow that lasts from ‘I do’ to the last dance.
Skincare: The Secret to a Flawless Wedding Day Glow
Your makeup is only as good as the skin underneath. A solid skincare routine in the months leading up to your wedding will make a huge difference in how your foundation sits and how radiant your complexion looks.
1. Start Early – The 6-Month Glow-Up Plan
If you don’t already have a skincare routine, now’s the time to start. The earlier, the better! Stick to a routine that includes:
Gentle cleanser (morning and night) ALWAYS remove your makeup! And bin the face wipes, they don’t properly clean your face and can dehydrate your skin
Hydrating serum or facial oil, applied before your moisturiser for the ultimate hydration boost
Moisturiser using the right moisturiser for your skin day and night will nourish and hydrate your skin
SPF 30+ every day (yes, even in Liverpool!)
Weekly exfoliation to slough off dead skin cells and promote a fresh glow
Weekly masks I recommend using a gentle pink clay mask and a hydrating hyaluronic acid sheet mask once a week for skin the GLOWS!
Glamorama Vegan Skincare is my very own skincare brand, designed especially for my clients and brides. Check it out for all of your skincare needs!
2. Hydration Begins from Within
Your skin thrives when it’s hydrated. Drink plenty of water, eat hydrating foods like cucumbers and watermelon, and avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine in the weeks leading up to your wedding (I know, Prosecco is tempting, but your skin will thank you!).
3. Professional Skincare Treatments – Worth the Investment?
If you want to take your skincare to the next level, professional treatments like aesthetic facials, chemical peels, or dermaplaning can give you an extra boost. However, never try a new invasive treatment too close to your wedding—give your skin at least 4-6 weeks to settle.
I recommend my Natural Face Lift Facial treatment before your wedding. It is a 90 minute facial using specialist facial massage to stimulate, smooth, and lift your skin like never before. It is also deeply relaxing and perfect to melt away any pre-wedding stress. It is absolutely safe to have it done a few days before the big day because it is an all natural holistic treatment.
4. The Night Before – Beauty Sleep & Skincare SOS
Let’s be real—most brides don’t actually sleep the night before their wedding. Whether it’s excitement, nerves, or last-minute to-do lists, getting a full 8 hours is wishful thinking. But don’t worry—I can make you look like you’ve had a solid night’s sleep! Here’s how to help your skin recover:
- Use Glamorama Vegan Skincare Regenerating 24k Gold Gel Eye Masks in the morning to depuff and brighten tired eyes. ( I use them on all of my brides!)
- Avoid salty foods (goodbye, late-night crisps) to prevent puffiness.
- Use a hyaluronic sheet mask for extra glow.
- Even if you only manage a few hours of rest, deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help you look fresher.
Wedding Day Makeup: Timeless, Radiant & Long-Lasting
Now that your skin is prepped and glowing, let’s talk makeup! Your wedding day look should enhance your natural beauty, last all day, and photograph like a dream in every light. Here’s how to get it right:
1. Trial Your Look – Non-Negotiable!
Do not skip the trial!!!! I won’t book a wedding without a trial. It is the most important step in your wedding prep. This is our opportunity to get to know one another, and to play with makeup and create your perfect bridal makeup look. You do not want to be making these decisions the day of, believe me.
2. Prime Your Face
Primers do different things, and you will need the appropriate formula for your skin. Skin that tends to get shiny or oily needs a mattifying formula to balance the skin throughout the day, where a dry skin may need a dewy, hydrating foundation.
You may not even need a primer, because Glamorama Vegan Skincare Moisturisers absorb beautifully into the skin and leave no greasy residue. Your foundation will sit smoothly and last all day without feeling heavy or cakey.
3. Foundation That Stays Put
Your wedding day isn’t the time for thick, heavy foundation. Look for a lightweight, buildable formula with a natural finish that enhances your skin rather than masking it. Choose a long wearing formula that contains hyaluronic acid so that it will stay all day without drying your skin. Avoid foundations that contain high levels of titanium dioxide because they can flash back in photos and make you look ghostly pale.
4. The Power of Setting Powder & Spray
To keep your makeup in place, set your foundation with a light dusting of translucent powder and finish with a setting spray. This ensures your look stays fresh through happy tears, sweaty dance moves, and all the hugs!
5. The Eye Makeup That Won’t Budge
Use an eyeshadow primer to prevent creasing.
Waterproof mascara and eyeliner are a must (because, emotions!).
Soft, romantic tones like champagne, gold, and taupe work beautifully in wedding photos.
6. Lipstick That Lasts Through Champagne & Kisses
Opt for a long-wearing, hydrating lipstick in a shade that complements your skin tone. Think 2-3 shades deeper than your natural lip colour. Pro tip: set your lipstick with a light dusting of loose powder, then apply another thin layer of lippie.
7. Don’t Forget the Glow!
A touch of highlighter on the high points of your face (cheekbones, brow bone, and cupid’s bow) and a dot in the inner corners of your eyes adds dimension and a natural glow without looking shiny.
8. Your Personal Touch-Up Kit – Provided by Me!
I provide all my brides with a complimentary touch-up kit, including:
- Blotting papers
- Lipstick sample for reapplication
- Powder for shine control - This ensures you stay picture-perfect all day long without having to worry about a thing!
- Cotton buds and tissues to blot and dab away any tears
